Chapter 29

I

was alone when I woke to the sunlight. Beside me was a bowl of fresh cut pineapple and a note.

Eat. You will need all your strength. —Sander.

Very naked, I ate the luscious fruit, trying to absorb what had happened. After my nightmare, I’d had a night of beautiful, blissful sleep. It didn’t make sense.

I still couldn't believe it. Crow was in the city, dead, as a vampire. Sander had been talking about my beloved Crow all this time. He’s in The Sigmund Building. Sigmund, I had to get Crow away from that vampire. Why would he be held by a vampire? As usual, I didn't know enough.

And I’d had sex with Sander again. I’d wanted to butter him up, but sex hadn’t been on my agenda. I shook with the memory of last night. It was spectacular, again, and I cursed myself under my breath. But I remembered the extreme yearning, me wanting Sander to claim me, all of me.

Even with all the pain Aubrey had been inflicting, it shouldn’t have happened. Yeah, it was easy to tell myself that now. “It would have never happened if I’d known about Crow,” I told myself in my most convincing voice as I searched through the closet for a disguise. “And last night means nothing now,” I added firmly.

I took a long shower, trying not to think of the easy and thrilling ways my body merged with the vampire’s last night. Instead, I closed my eyes and felt like I was falling. All I’d wanted since I left the reservation besides to survive was to find Crow. He was vampire now, but it didn’t matter. It seems I may finally be able to find him, even in death.

I dressed in some of the fabulous clothes Sander had in the bedroom. The skirt and suit jacket were not my usual style, but I pulled my hair up in a tight bun to complete the conservative look. Eating the rest of the pineapple while sitting at the dining table that looked out over the city, I sighed. I could have gotten used to this, but I had no intentions of staying long.

Finding my backpack, I saw it was unzipped. Thankfully the black binder was still inside. I flipped to the S section looking for Sigmund, but nothing remained of the page but a jagged edge. It had been ripped out. Looking at the other pages, I realized Sander must have gotten rid of the sheet with his name, thus getting rid of Sigmund’s information too. Damn, there goes that idea. I slammed the binder down. Sander may know all about Sigmund, but I didn’t want to rely solely on the vampire. Not even knowing if Sander would agree to help me, I’d wanted to prepare myself. Now, I’d have to go talk to Tombs if I wanted a heads up tonight.

Walking down the hall, I paused in front of the other room. If Sander was anything like Aubrey, he’d be in his day bed, which was usually built into the newer buildings like this one.
